Lower Urinary Tract Anatomy

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located in the abdomen just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is a component of the male reproductive system and is made of two lobes enclosed in a thin capsule. The prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that empties urine from the bladder via the penis out of the body.

Functions of the prostate

Scientists do not know all the functions of the prostate, but its primary function is to produce seminal fluid for the survival and transport of sperm. Seminal fluid contributes between 2–20% to the total semen volume. The gland also secretes substances such as prostaglandin, zinc and hormones.
